Starting out on my own is both a new year milestone and the start of something new in my working life. After 16 years as a painter and decorator and two years focused on new-build projects, I’ve taken the plunge into self-employment. I’ve been trading independently for 18 months and I’m approaching this next phase with intention — blending traditional word-of-mouth values with modern marketing and continually improving my craft.
Working for various companies over the years taught me the trade and built my experience. Moving away from employed roles felt like the natural next step: to control the quality of work, choose the kinds of jobs I take, and reconnect with the variety I enjoyed working on private homes. New builds have been rewarding, but I missed the challenge of restoring older rooms and helping homeowners transform tired spaces.
Going solo didn’t happen on a whim. I kept the sensible approach of continuing to accept work from contractors while building my own client base. It would be unwise to declare independence without a plan or any work lined up, so I’ve combined steady contracting work with a measured expansion into private projects.
The way people find trades has changed, but the underlying principle remains the same: relationships matter. Contacts still unlock doors, yet the digital age gives us new ways to be found and to communicate. I’ve embraced multiple channels to grow the business — social networks, printed business cards, vehicle signage, a website, and this blog — all to make it easier for clients to discover and contact me.
Your first impression with a tradesperson can be shaped as much online as it is on-site. For background on the company and my approach, you can read more on the About page or see feedback from past clients on the reviews page.
Online platforms have made it simpler for customers to check a tradesperson’s reputation and for tradespeople to gather recommendations. That’s a huge advantage for professionals who consistently deliver high standards. At the same time, digital reviews can be misused or misinterpreted — a single minor issue can be magnified. That’s why I focus on transparency, clear communication and getting the job right the first time.
If you’re considering hiring a decorator, it’s sensible to look at a mixture of online reviews and personal recommendations. If you’d like to see what previous customers have said, visit the reviews page to read genuine client feedback.
One trend I’ve noticed among newer start-ups is the tendency to offer a wide range of trades beyond their core specialism. Some do so well, but others overreach and leave customers with substandard work. I value doing what I know well: painting and decorating — that is my qualification and the work I’ve done for over 16 years.
At the same time, expanding my skillset in a controlled way makes sense. I’m leaning towards learning complementary trades at a practical level — plastering small areas and tiling for minor jobs — so I can offer a more complete service on modest projects without calling in multiple contractors. Any new skills I take on will be for small-scale work that supports my decorating projects, not wholesale departures from my core trade.
Improving and learning new techniques is part of being a long-term tradesperson. My goal is to reach a competent standard in patch plastering and simple tiling so I can handle those elements on projects where they enhance the finish. Where more extensive work is required, I’ll continue to partner with trusted tradespeople whose work I know and trust — ensuring clients always receive a high-quality result.
I’ll keep sharing updates about the jobs I’m doing here on the blog and through social channels. If you’d like to discuss a project or request a quote, please get in touch — I’m happy to talk through options and provide tailored advice. You can contact me directly via the contact page or learn more about the business on the About page.
For background information, I also have an earlier website presence at http://dbdecorating.wix.com and the company domain www.db-decs.co.uk. If you’re ready to discuss a job, use the contact form or drop a message — viewing past reviews can also help you feel confident about choosing a contractor for your home.
Thanks for reading — I’m excited to see where this chapter leads and to continue delivering decorating work that makes homes look and feel better.
