Water Based Woodwork

On my last post I mentioned that I had made the leap into using purely water based products on any woodwork I do on my jobs, so here's a quick recap on how things have gone so far. Over the years I have used water based products infrequently, some were better than others, but normally tried to stick with oil based products as i know the finish I could produce. Then I did a couple of jobs for customers with young children who needed a product that dried quickly and didn't give off loads of fumes. I went with Johnstones Aqua Gloss and was very impressed with the results. Already used Dulux Quick Dry Satinwood and got good results with that, so it seemed logical to use water based every job. The biggest push was two things. One the speed in between coats and two no more fumes from gloss.

So with this in mind I mentioned to my next few customers about my change to water based and asked them to give me their opinion on how they thought the finish was, the quality of paint and lack of fumes. Each one said the lack of fumes was amazing. Before I started they expected the house to stink of paint for days but water based eliminated that. Also they didn't expect the woodwork to be bone dry by the time they got in that evening. As for the finish so far no complaints, couple even thought it was oil based due to the sheen level. The Aqua gloss is standing up well, true it does leave my brushes slightly out of shape but it's something I can work with easy enough. At the moment it is my go to trim paint, but I will try other brands as and when the opportunity arises.
